Bird Watching

ntre Rios is home to over 350 species of birds. These species include from magnificent raptors to green colored parrots and most may be spotted in any of the walking trails throughout the ranch. The bird-life around the main house is also prolific. As the best time of the day to enjoy birds activity is in the cooler hours, we recommend going out at first light in the morning and again an hour or two before sunset. Please bring your own binoculars.

Fishing

ou can actually fish at our pristine Rio Alcaraz but if you are looking for a more exciting fishing experience we can arrange fishing trips to the Parana River from the nearby cities of Santa Elena or La Paz.
In the Rio Parana there are numerous labyrinths of channels, lagoons, bays and river tributaries. This magical water world is home to the freshwater Dorado - the golden warrior. Similar in shape to a salmon it has a massive torpedo shaped body covered by shiny, golden scales and a huge bold dorsal fin.

Predatory by nature it is a brutal fighting machine armed with vicious teeth. Until recently few westerners had ever experienced fishing in this remote area but increasingly the word is that Dorado is the bonefish of the freshwater world. They can grow up to 30lbs but the majority caught on a fly rod are between 4-12lbs - anything bigger is near impossible to land, such is their power.

Keep in mind that professional guides conduct the fishing trips so it is compulsive to make reservations in advance. Some guides can provide the fishing equipment but this is not always the rule.

The Dorado and Surubi Fishing Season runs from October to April.

Beach

he coast of the Rio Alcaraz has lovely white sandy beaches that are ideal for the sunbathers. As the waters are unpolluted and the beaches nearly untouched by man this whole coast along the river is a paradisiacal spot at the ranch. Keep in mind that as it is still a river that depends on rainfalls to get its water sometimes the beaches disappear under a flood.

Hunting

lthough hunting is not allowed at Vizcacheras we do host hunters that come to Entre Rios and go hunting to the permitted areas or to other private ranches. At the ranch we are proudly working to turn Vizcacheras into a natural reserve.

The dove hunting season is truly year-round. One may take the weather into account when choosing the time of the year. Remember that the seasons of South America are opposite to those of the northern hemisphere.

The Perdiz Hunting season is May, June and July in Argentina. Perdiz are a little larger than a quail, and slightly smaller than a partridge.

Horseback Riding

he top-hit pastime at the ranch; horseback riding can take you nearly everywhere in Vizcacheras. You can actually experience how the ranch is managed and mingle with the gauchos on their daily routines or you can just wander around and get lost in the never-ending fields. Nevertheless we do recommend always going horseback riding with personnel from the ranch.

Here's an example of the trees and waterplants you will encounter wandering around the ranch, this list was made by Yolanda Querchi* while she studied the lagoons at the ranch for potential home to baby Yacares (South American crocs):

Espinillo, Espino Caven (Acacia caven); Ñandubay, Sprengel (Prosopis affinis); Chañar,Burkar (Geoffroea decorticans); Molle Negro, Longleaf Peppertree (Schinus longifolius); Tala, (Celtis Tala); Algarrobo negro, Hieron (Prosopis nigra); Sauce Criollo, Willd (Salís Humboltiana); Laurel (Ocotea acutifolia); Curupí (Sapium haematospermun); Timbó negro (Enterolobium contortisiliquum); Ceibo, (Eritrina crista-galli); Sarandi Colorado, (Cephalantus glabratus); Repollito de agua, Water Lettuce, shellflower (Pistia Stratiotes); Lentejita de agua, Greater Duckweed (Spirodela intermedia); Berro de agua, Water cress (Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum); Camalote, Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes); Catay (Polygonum hidropiperoides).

Gauchos en acción

All year round our Aberdeen Angus beef herd roam our grasslands. We have around 850 cows with their calves. The total heads of cattle come up to 1,200 to 1,500 depending on the time of the year. Watch them contentedly chewing the cud ... or, just sometimes, gazing despairingly heavenwards when their coats receive an unexpected soaking. Springtime (September to December) is the season of calving (giving birth). October, November and December is insemination season. In summertime (December to March) it is fun to watch the cattle taking their compulsive baths against potential summer pests. Also this is mating season or "second round" after the insemination season. All year round is fattening season.

Agriculturewise between August and November is sowing season (Maize or Soya) and harvest is always around April and May.

Golf

es! You can play your favorite sport at the nearby golf course of Santa Elena. The British BOVRIL Company built this nine-hole golf course at the beginning of the last century. The golf course has beautiful views of the Rio Parana. The best season to play at this golf course is during springtime (September for the southern hemisphere) as all the exotic South American trees, as Jacarandas and Lapachos, are in full blossom.

Thermal Waters

in the nearby city of La Paz thermal waters have been discovered. During 2003 the new La Paz Thermal resort has been opened. It consists of 11 thermal water pools, with different depths and temperatures. The water surges at 40 degrees Celsius and is of marine origin. The magnificent views to the Rio Paraná and the islands are worth a visit. The best time of the day to visit the thermal waters is in the afternoon. You can relax at the pools while watching an amazing sunset over the River Paraná. Visit to the thermal pools can be arranged from Vizcacheras if you happen to enjoy this type of amenities.
